Snow Days at Topanien

Wow, what a week! Here in Portland, OR, we got a huge snowstorm – more than a foot (30cm) of snow fell practically overnight, blanketing the city in soft, cold, quiet, and no little confusion. You see, we don’t get that much snow here. Cold? Yes. Ice? Sure. Snow? Actual snow? We’re lucky to get an inch (2.54cm).

This January, it’s a different story here in the Willamette Valley:

Snowmen with smiles and signs, icicles, frozen hilltops, and the stark beauty of a snow-covered forest… It’s been nine years since the last ‘big one’ here, but we’re all hanging in there! The future holds more cold days for us, but the snow is really unpredictable, so you might want to get an early start thinking about those…

November 30, 2016

I stopped by Topanien Global Gifts, my favorite gift shop in Multnomah Village, for a gift for my mom. There was so much to choose from I had a hard time deciding. It means a lot to me that their product is handmade and mostly fair trade. The African Baskets were my first choice because of their large size and multi-functionality until I started looking at the beautiful wool pillow covers. After that I wandered all around the shop and found the most amazing metal ornaments. So many cute designs to hang in mom’s kitchen. I decided that I would get one of those ornaments for my mom. She loved it and hung it up right away. I will be back for more. - Carol
